| When you're new to Eastern Star, the strange
names, abbreviations and acronyms can be mind-boggling! Here's a list of
some non-secret ones to help you along. Most of these reflect what happens in
Maine, so please do send yours to be added! Scroll down to request or submit more
glossary terms. Conferring of Degrees - initiation. CR & R - The Constitution, Rules and Regulations. It's the book of rules on how to run meetings and settle disputes, what's right and wrong according to the General Grand Chapter. Degrees - The lessons of the 5 star points. District - A grouping of local chapters in a geographical area. Kind of the way towns are grouped as a county. DDGM or "Diddy-Gim" - District Deputy Grand Matron, the liason between the State level and the District. She attends the meetings of the chapters in her District and passes along information and news from Grand Chapter. Friends of the Feather - These are special assistants to the Most Worthy Grand Matron for the 2006-2009 Triennium. There is one in each State. Maine's is Sister Sallee C. General Grand Chapter- The international level. In the U.S., New York is not under GCC jurisdiction. Grand Chapter- The statewide level. Grand Chapter Session - A yearly convention lasting a few days. It's opened by the outgoing Worthy Grand Matron and Patron, and often includes one or more evenings of introductions and special recognitions, and annual meetings of some committees including Visioneers, Secretaries, Treasurers, and Grand Representatives. There is a scheduled period of debate and voting on constitutional and rulemaking issues, and the event ends with the installation of a new suite of Grand Officers for the ensuing year. Grand Family - A special event where the Grand Officers come and confer degrees. Sometimes there are real candidates, sometimes courtesy candidates. Grand Family Exchange - The Grand Family of another state or country visits to do the degree work. Grand Honors - a salute for the highest dignitaries. Grand Jurisdiction - The State level Grand Representative - A kind of ambassador to another state, province or country. In Maine, in order to be appointed you have to have been a Worthy Matron or a Worthy Patron. The appointment is always a surprise, and it's considered a big compliment. The term is usually two years but can vary. In many states, the Grand Representative is treated as a member of the Grand Family and receives Grand honors when appointed and again when presented at Grand Chapter. Grand Visitation - In some states, 2 to 4 chapters come together and do certain parts of the ritual work for the WGM and WGP, if he is able to travel with her. G.R.O.M.M.E.T. - Grand Representatives Of Maine, Making Eternal Ties. the Grommets Association is the official association of past and present Grand Representatives in Maine. IGRA - International Grand Representatives Association Installation - The annual changeover of leadership. Official Visit - In Many states, a member of the Grand Family visits to answer questions and instruct your chapter in ritual work. "Pago" - Past appointed Grand Officer Star Club - The working group of the chapter, dealing with fundraising, special events and other details that would otherwise draw out meetings and make them too long. Many Star Clubs have their own name. Supreme Grand Jurisdiction - National level, outside the U.S. Travel Badge - In Maine, a ribbon earned by fulfilling a list of requirements.
